The Windham Inn, c. 1783, is a beautiful, iconic building adjacent to the town's green.  The structure is considered a critical component in the Windham Center Historic District and the National Register of Historic Places, the Inn plays a pivotal role in Windham Center's history and is a much loved and revered part of our town. In its recent past, it has housed apartments and a restaurant.

Current owners, RCN Capital, acquired the Inn from their defaulting owner and the town of Windham via a tax foreclosure action, in November 2016. In the ensuing 17 months, the owner has taken no steps to secure the inn, arrest deterioration, make improvements or market the property. RCN Capital has requested permission to demolish the Windham Inn based on its current condition.

We want RCN Capital to be a responsible owner and good neighbor - to maintain the property they worked so diligently to re-acquire, honor the Inn's history and National Historic Register designation by preservation and restoration, or sell or donate the Inn to a party who will do so.

By allowing RCN to continue to neglect their property, they are, in fact, practicing demolition by neglect. It also sends a message that wealthy companies and individuals can circumvent state and national historic district designations. If Windham Center loses the Inn to demolition, we lose an irreplaceable and pivotal part of our town's history.
