Donald Trump is a threat to Australia’s democracy
The issue
As a deeply concerned citizen of Australia, I am urgently calling upon our esteemed leader, the Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, to promptly distance Australia from the international alliance with the USA under the presidency of Donald Trump, and create a stronger alliance with the United Kingdom and Europe. The potential threat that Trump and fascism represents to the international community at large is substantial and alarming. This dire predicament stands to escalate if Australia remains idly within this alliance, thereby positioning ourselves alongside nations such as Russia, Israel, and North Korea in the event of a conflict.
Donald Trumps’ stance on climate change, trade tariffs and his alliances with the world’s dictators are a dangerous threat to our democracy, climate safety and economic stability. To also be taken into consideration is the recent decision of the US Supreme court, which seems a sitting president to be immune to any prosecution for crimes while in office.
Concurrently, the misogynistic rhetoric of “your body my choice” which has found its way into mainstream society since his election win is a blatant attempt to undermine and silence women and has created an unsafe atmosphere for many women around the world.
Research shows that influential states have a significant role in shaping international response during times of crises. As an influential state ourselves, by aligning with potential global threats, Australia could unintentionally enable catastrophic scenarios (source: International Relations Theory). For this reason, immediate action must be taken to break this alliance, and thus distance ourselves from Trump's extreme and polarizing rhetoric.
The prospect of being caught up in Trump's xenophobic and racist propaganda due to our alliance presents an existential crisis to Australia's multicultural identity. This scenario is not only counterintuitive to who we are as Australians but also represents a perilous precariousness that our nation can ill afford (source: Australian Bureau of Statistics).
It's time for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to act now and disengage Australia from this problematic alliance. Our nation's future, our international standing, and our very identity depend on it. Please, sign this petition today and help us secure a safer path for Australia.
