A statue of Ruby Bridges

A statue of Ruby Bridges

Ruby Bridges deserves a statue because she was brave enough to be the first Black student to attend an all White school. She should be remembered because she was only 6 years old when she attended the all white school as an African American. Another reason why, is that out of the many children who took the test to attend a white school, she was one of six that passed. She also made a huge difference in how our schools stance against segregation. This shows that Ruby was a very brave person as a child and as an adult she never attended that school, our schools would never be this diverse. Overall, Ruby should definitely be recognized and remembered because she was brave enough to be the first person to start our journey towards ending segregation.
Ruby was the first Black student to attend an all white school. She had to be escorted by marshals everyday because of the danger of her going alone. She would get threats from many people. For example, on her second day she even got threatened by a woman saying she was going to poison her. The marshals decided it was the safest if she only brought her own food from home. This shows that Ruby was brave even as a child, she kept on following what she knew was best for her. Even though she was the first Black student, that didn’t stop her from getting an education.
Another reason she deserves a statue was because she was very intelligent throughout her life despite what she’s been through. For instance she had to take a complicated test to see if she was applicable to attend the school. Her parents disagreed on Ruby taking the test. Her mom thought it was a great opportunity for Ruby to get a better education. Her dad didn’t like the idea of her going to the white school because he thought it would be dangerous. Of course she passed and made it in! This proves that she was smart and she really earned her education even as a child.
The fact that she made a huge impact in how society is today is the most important reason why she deserves a statue. Because Ruby took those first few steps and attended the school, our schools are now changed for the better. For example, before she attended black and white people drank from different drinking fountains. Since she changed everything, everyone now drinks from the same drinking fountain. Our schools are now integrated.. This shows that she made a huge impact on how our schools and society in general run/work today.
Overall Ruby Bridges deserves more respect and credit for everything she’s done. She did many things and deserves to be honored and respected. I think a statue will do a good job of getting people to recognize her more.
