Daithí Mac Lochlainn started this petition to President Donald J. Trump and

We call upon all political candidates for elected office in the United States of America to eschew and publicly repudiate all overtures of support from overseas bigots.   While anyone is free to expound any sort of nonsense one chooses, all forms of bigotry, sectarian, religious, racial, linguistic, sexist and homophobic, particularly from overseas individuals and political parties must have no input in the U.S. body politic.

Ian Paisley, Jr.’s and Sammy Wilson’s photo-op stunt on Twitter and Jolene Bunting’s “Ulster Scots for [name of candidate]” spectacle do not add to the public discourse of our country at this most historic juncture.

We expect our candidates and elected officials to be able to articulate their positions and policies plainly to the American people, without “support” from anyone who can barely read one’s own words from a sheet of paper on the floor of the Belfast City Council.

In this year of 2020, candidates for nationwide office represent Scottish Gaelic, German and Tamil-speaking parentage.  None should need the counsel of hemiglots across the Atlantic, stewing with contempt for their neighbors on a corner of an island.

Such have already spoken, and their utterances fail to impress:

“They are poofs [LGBT]. I don't care if they are ratepayers [taxpayers].” ~ Sammy Wilson.

“Taigs [Catholics] don't pay rates [taxes].” ~ Sammy Wilson.

“I would never want to read anything Council O Muilleoir would write, especially in that Leprechaun [Irish] language he likes to spout.” ~ Sammy Wilson.

“Would I trust them [Muslims] to go down to the shops for me?  Yes, I would.” ~ Peter Robinson [DUP]..

"I’m so sick of the poor Catholic bastards they make me sick. I wish they would just go down to Ireland and then they can fly their flags and change the [Irish language] street signs down there." ~ Jolene Bunting

“Please be patient I have famine [An Gorta Mór/Great Irish Hunger, 1845-1849]” ~ Jolene Bunting.

The sheer stupidity of appealing to a son of a Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig) speaker while relentlessly denigrating the Irish language (Gaeilge) is underscored by the 2018 address of the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar at National Observatory in our nation’s Capital:

“This year, as well, as you know, is Bliain na Gaeilge, and it’s a year in which we’re celebrating our Irish language, our native language.  And again, I learned yesterday that — which I didn’t know, I was surprised I didn’t know it — that President Trump’s mother is Scottish, and she spoke Scots Gaelic.  And Scots Gaelic is very similar to Irish; to our language, Gaeilge.  You can actually understand it.  So that was a fascinating thing to know, and a thing to learn.”

We urge all candidates to issue public statements rejecting the aforementioned bigotry.

Going forward, we urge careful reconsideration of the parameters of the guest list for future Saint Patrick’s Day festivities at the White House, the People’s House, and on Capitol Hill, the People’s Forum.
