Perogies Please!

The Issue

It is now 2019, and this is the year that Perogies get the long overdue respect that they so deliciously deserve.

Originally spelled Pierogi in the old country, they are defined as: “A small dough dumpling stuffed with a filling such as potato or cheese, typically served as a dish with onions or sour cream, they are a traditional Polish or Ukrainian dumpling that can be filled with a variety of ingredients.”  Or as I define them: “Baba’s little pastry pockets of pure heaven.”

As some of our forefathers made the great journey to immigrate to North America, these delicious packets of sustenance made the trip with them.  Providing fuel for those hard working folks as they carved out farms, businesses, families, and countries quite frankly.  Often through times of great difficulty and hardship, these newcomers paved the way for the lives which we are fortunate enough to live today.  All of which would not have been possible without the mighty Pierogi!

Although the traditional dish has survived, and in fact thrived, throughout the generations with great resolve, it’s spelling has not.  Though the recipes have stood the test of time, the name has adapted and changed to Perogie to keep up with the times while acclimating to its new territory, and the official English language of its inhabitants.  Perogies (plural) is now the commonly accepted terminology in both packaging and conversation throughout North America.  Please see the following examples of how to properly use this current spelling in correct context:

“Have you tried Phyllis’s perogies yet?  They are absolutely to die for.”

“Marlene and the gals had a perogie bee to make all these for the fall supper.”

Norma:  “What would you say your all time favourite meal is dear?”  Dan: “No contest, perogies hands down, they’re the tits!”

I now please urge you to join me in helping Perogies take their rightful place in North American culture.  This is the official call for all  Perogie lovers of every region, race, religion, and creed to unite in solidarity!  Please give a moment of your time to help this noble meal get its turn shine like the glistening butter it’s cooked in.  I for one believe Perogies deserve their day in the sun, the only question is, ARE YOU WITH ME?

Dear North American leaders, industry, and dictionary executives, we the undersigned, hereby respectfully request the term Perogie(s) be officially declared as the North America spelling and nomenclature for the traditional dish known as Pierogi.  And as such be recognized in both published dictionary and implemented in online grammar assisting programs such as Autocorrect and Spellcheck.  We thank you in advance for your time and assistance in this important matter.
