Currently, Borneo is burning thanks to a forest fire, illegally started by big palm plantation owners to produce palm oil for the world. Though starting forest fires is illegal, these plantation owners are bribing the governments to turn the other way. These fires were started on the borders of Malaysia and Singapore. What these plantation owners are overlooking is that they are destroying the habitat for orangutans, predicted to be extinct in 2020. The orangutans are being killed in the fires, and the lucky survivors have no place to live, evidently dying as well. This is all just for palm oil. We consume an average of 17 pounds (7.7 kg) per year, and that's not all. We use palm oil in our every day lives. One example is laundry detergent, which we use regularly.
