Defund the Police

Defund the Police

It has become increasingly evident that the only solution for police brutality is to defund the police altogether. The function of these militarized police units in our communities have only stoked fear, violence, division, and suffering.
The initial purpose of police was to round-up escaped slaves. Only sixty years ago did the Civil Rights movement begin. Police were enforcing the laws that said black Americans were both inferior and unequal to white ones. The Civil Rights moment was the culmination of hundreds of years of slavery and oppression. There were peaceful protests that were met with police brutality.
Black blood is being shed at the hands of police in the year 2020. These murderers often get a slap on the wrist, walk free, or face very little punishment.
George Floyd's life was snuffed out by police and Derek Chauvin wasn't arrested for three days after the video surfaced. The three other officers, at the time of this writing, have yet to be arrested.
Breonna Taylor's murderers are still walking free. "Policing" the streets. Enforcing the law from thrones seated above it.
It is evident that black bodies are seen as expendable in this country. The Criminal Justice system is a failure. The sixth leading cause of young black men in the United States is police brutality. There are more black men and women in prison than anywhere else in the world. The system was built on the foundation of slavery: it has only evolved, adapted, and become more cunning.
We have cried out for change and reformation. Our voices have been met with deaf ears. Defund the police. Make our communities safer.
