Another One Dead! Save Ex-Muslim from Apostasy Laws

Another One Dead! Save Ex-Muslim from Apostasy Laws
The Issue
Ex-Muslims (mainly atheists) are being actively sorted out, marginalized, segregated, persecuted, executed, arsonated and even vitriolaged in Muslim societies specially predominantly Muslim countries.
As of 2014, laws in various Muslim-majority countries prescribed for the apostate sentences range from inhumane execution to life imprisonment. Sharia courts in some countries use civil code to void the Muslim apostate's marriage and to deny child-custody rights as well as inheritance rights. But the social boycott and stigma from peers is even more spiteful than the physical coercion.
My story as an Ex-Muslim atheist settled in Pakistan is a typical example of social exclusion of us people. Even though, I can't come out before my parents due to fear of getting abandoned or even killed, resulting in the eventual destruction of my career aspirations. Whenever, I've raised dissent, I've received a backlash from radicals, with reactions ranging from ceasing of relations and occasional yelling to mob attacks and expulsion from my high school. People living in more remote areas, especially girls who are already a target of Islamists, are even more prone to violence. A mere hint of dissent can result in domestic violence and honor killings.
Persecution of freethinkers and liberal individuals through blasphemy laws rather than apostasy laws is an even greater threat. Because it effects a far wider spectrum of people, even progressive Muslims. Liberal Bloggers and people who actively voice their opinion on social media are picked up by security agencies in the name of treason and then dreadfully tortured and sometimes even mutilated and thrown into wild terrain.
I on the behalf of the Ex-Muslim community am putting forward the following minimal standards that we want world leaders to get implemented in Muslim majority countries:
- That, blasphemy and apostasy laws should be immediately abolished all across the world.
- That, the conversion process (on paper) should be made explicit and legal in countries where people born in Muslim households can't change their religion.
- Free speech and critique against religion should be protected at all costs.
- A separate cell should be created in law enforcement agencies shielding apostates from radical attacks. A helpline dedicated to reports against such attacks should also be created.
- That to normalize criticism on religion progressive Muslims should side by us in fighting radical Islam.
- A fair poll should be conducted by international organizations like amnesty and UNHCR ; so that we are represented on paper for our actual number.
- Apostates under death threats should be immediately granted asylum or some suitable arrangements should be made for them.
I urge all people with a sense of human rights, from all walks of life to sign this petition, so that our voice is heard in the corridors of power.
