The Issue

As a resident and concerned parent in Lower Manhattan, I am asking for your support in petitioning the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) to install a legal pedestrian crosswalk at the intersection of Pearl Street and Fulton Street, in the heart of the Seaport/FiDi neighborhood.

This intersection has become a critical crossing point for hundreds of pedestrians daily, especially children. Over the past few years, foot traffic has significantly increased due to several important factors:

Parents bring their children to and from Peck Slip School daily via this route.
Fifth-grade students regularly cross the street independently on their way to school.

At this corner, one of the most popular playgrounds in the neighborhood draws families throughout the day.

Nearly all pedestrian traffic in the area naturally crosses here, as it’s the most direct and intuitive path.

Although many drivers already slow down or stop for pedestrians, the absence of a legal crosswalk or signage creates daily confusion and a potential safety hazard.

We’re not waiting for a tragic accident to demand action. We’re calling on the City to proactively protect the safety of children, families, and all residents and visitors in this growing and vibrant neighborhood.

We respectfully urge NYC DOT to:

✅ Conduct a pedestrian safety review of this intersection
✅ Install legal crosswalk markings and signage
✅ Treat this request as a matter of public safety and community priority

This is a small change that could save lives. Help us make this crossing safe, legal, and clearly marked - for everyone.

Please sign and share this petition. Your voice matters.

Together, we can make our neighborhood safer!
