It took almost 40 years for the humpback whale population to rebound. It could all be undone if they are taken off the endangered species list.

Many years ago, humpback whales were hunted to the brink of extinction. Because of whaling, the population declined 90%. Their struggle to survive soon grabbed the world’s attention and an international effort was soon underway to save these majestic, intelligent creatures. Decades later, the cooperation paid off and the humpback whales rebounded. All the work to save these animals could be undone if the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has its way.

NOAA is recommending the humpback whale be taken off the endangered species list, instead reclassifying them into 14 groups. Only 2 of the groups would be protected by the Endangered Species Act. Many experts have come out saying the move is premature and not enough is known about their recovery and how the plan could impact their survival.

We need your voice to be heard so the humpback whale doesn’t face the brink of extinction again. Please tell NOAA not to remove the humpback whale off the endangered species list.

Proponents of NOAA’s plan say the whales will still be covered by the international ban on whaling and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. These do not offer the same comprehensive protections as the Endangered Species Act (MMPA). Remaining on the endangered species list allows the US government to address threats such as climate change, ocean acidification, ocean noise, and habitat disruption -- all not covered under the whaling ban and MMPA.

NOAA is now taking public comments and they need to hear from people like you. Signing the petition will let them know we do not support their plan to remove the humpback whale from the endangered species list.
