Don’t Rename Ridge Road in Pasco County After Trump

The Issue

Ridge Road exists because Pasco County residents waited years, paid taxes, and endured construction to improve safety and mobility in our community. It was built to serve the public — not to flatter a politician or attract a photo-op.

Now, county leaders are floating the idea of renaming Ridge Road after Donald Trump, not because of any historic connection to Pasco County, but in the hope that doing so might convince him to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony. That alone should give residents pause. Public infrastructure should never be renamed as a bargaining chip for political attention.

Donald Trump is a highly divisive and volatile political figure. His presidency and public conduct have deeply polarized the country, sparked mass protests, and fueled ongoing political unrest. Renaming a major county road after him would turn a shared, everyday public space into a permanent partisan symbol — one that many Pasco County residents did not ask for and do not support.

Road names are meant to help communities function, preserve local history, and reflect shared values. They should not be used to signal political allegiance or curry favor with powerful individuals. When elected officials treat public assets as tools for political branding, it erodes trust and shifts focus away from the real work of serving residents.

There are also practical concerns. Renaming a major roadway can create confusion for emergency responders, residents, businesses, and visitors. It can require costly updates to signage, maps, and records — all for a symbolic gesture that benefits no one who actually lives here.

This proposal also sets a troubling precedent. If roads can be renamed to honor living political figures based on momentary power or popularity, what stops future boards from doing the same? Pasco County deserves thoughtful, community-driven decisions, not impulsive ideas driven by national politics.

We are calling on the Pasco County Board of County Commissioners, including Chair Jack Mariano, to reject any effort to rename Ridge Road after Donald Trump. Keep our public spaces focused on serving the people who use them every day. Respect the diversity of our community. And stop using taxpayer-funded infrastructure as a political prop.
