The issue

For many of us growing up or living in Auckland, the Quickcat is more than just a ferry; it's a cherished part of our local history and culture. For Four decades, the Quickcat has faithfully served the Auckland to Waiheke Island route, becoming an integral part of the lives of many commuters and travelers. This iconic vessel first took to passenger service in January 1987, representing a significant leap as the first ferry specifically built for this crucial route. It was not just a mode of transportation but a venue for unforgettable stories: there were times when babies were born on board and a legendary dog made headlines for travelling solo between owners.

The Quickcat is more than an engineering feat; it's a symbol of Auckland's maritime heritage. Yet, in recent times, this historic ferry has been sidelined since May/June 2025 and its absence is deeply felt by those who value its importance. To relegate such a vital part of our history to the past is to forget the very fabric that has woven our community together.

The cultural and historical significance of the Quickcat cannot be overstated. It represents the innovations of its time, the spirit of community, and a piece of Auckland's history that brings nostalgia and pride. Returning it to service is not only a homage to our shared history but a reinvestment in our local culture and tourism.

We call upon Fullers360 to recognize the value the Quickcat holds for the community and work towards refurbishing her and reintroducing this important vessel back to the Waiheke Route. During refurbishment, Fullers360 should repaint Quickcat into her original Gulf Cruiser livery (with Fullers360 decals of course) which she first debuted from her launch in Fremantle Australia on 7 December 1986.

By bringing back the Quickcat, we honour not just our past, but we create new opportunities for present and future generations to appreciate our maritime roots. Let us ensure that this beloved ferry continues to be a part of Auckland's seafaring identity, allowing both residents and tourists alike to connect with our rich history.

Let us not allow this Auckland icon to fade into obscurity. Please sign this petition to help bring back the Historic Auckland Ferry Quickcat, so it may continue to serve with pride and inspire future tales of adventure and community spirit.
