The current Government's changes to the education system in 2028 will fully wipe out NCEA. We are a group of Level 3 social studies students petitioning against these changes as we believe they'll do more harm than good. The current coalition government proposed these changes because students “game the system”, and they want to make it easier for employers to understand and prepare students for the modern global economy.

Our key points are:
AI is a big part of our future; we need students to be more creative and out-of-the-box thinkers, not in-the-box, which is what heavy exam curricula will force students to do.
Making students have to pass an external exam to gain a subject puts marginalised groups at a disadvantage, and exams aren't just knowledge-based; the results are shaped by other factors such as anxiety around exams, disabilities and neurodiversity.
Exams don't reward or prepare students for the real world, as exams just reward memorisation, which is a skill AI can do. 
Social studies involves active citizenship; it is what has allowed us to learn the skills to question things. Removing this and replacing it with sociology feels like future students won't learn how to use their voices to respond to real-world issues.
