The Issue

Arkansas is on the brink of a childcare crisis that threatens the well-being and future of our youngest residents, disrupts the lives of families, and impacts the productivity of our workforce. Without immediate intervention, many childcare centers may have to close their doors, leaving countless children without the critical early education they need during this formative time in their lives.

The situation is dire. According to a recent report, over 40% of the childcare providers in Arkansas are struggling to remain financially afloat. This is not just a statistic—it's a real threat to the stability of our state. Quality early childhood education is pivotal for a child's development, influencing cognitive, social, and emotional growth, and aiding in readiness for school. Losing access to these services means risking the future prospects of Arkansas' next generation.

Moreover, when childcare centers close, the ripple effect is vast. Families face the immediate challenge of finding alternative care, which may not be readily available or affordable. This forces parents to make difficult decisions, such as reducing work hours or even quitting jobs, directly impacting household incomes and the broader state economy.

Action must be taken now before November 1. We urge the Arkansas Legislature and Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders to convene a Special Session to address this urgent issue. Specifically, we ask for the allocation of state surplus funds to sustain and support quality early childhood education and services throughout Arkansas. The time to act is now, not later, as delaying will only compromise the futures we are trying to build for our children.

By signing this petition, you are standing up for the children of Arkansas and advocating for the future strength and success of our community. Let us ensure that quality childcare remains a priority in our state. Please, add your voice and sign this petition today. Together, we can make a difference.
