Don't Let Nebraska Become Arizona

The Issue

Last April, the state of Arizona passed a costly, divisive, and unconstitutional immigration law known as SB1070. Unfortunately, a bill similar to this law has been promised to be introduced in the Nebraska Legislature in January 2011.

Such unconstitutional laws create expensive legal costs to defend in court. For example, similar laws passed at the city level have cost Hazelton, PA $2.4 million and Farmers Branch, TX more than $3.2 million in legal fees. In both cities, the laws were ruled unconstitutional. Fremont, NE, has increased taxes 18% to cover its legal costs.

Police have strongly opposed the law saying that it will prevent them from protecting public safety because it will cause people to fear contacting the police to report crimes or assist in the investigation of crimes.  In Arizona, the Arizona Association of Chiefs of Police announced they firmly oppose the law.
