Bad equipment maintenance created pressure that blew apart an ElectroStatic Precipitator mounted 12 stories above an MHF tank. The explosion sent a 40 ton chunk of debris hurtling 60 mph towards 25 tons of MHF. We didn't die. Why? The debris landed 3 ft clear of the tank. As Vanessa Sutherland, Chair, US Chemical Safety Board put it, “We were really, really lucky... It could have been much more catastrophic.” If the tank had been hit, thousands of lives would have been lost. To this day, this brush with death motivates our actions. Make sure they read this: One of the world’s most dangerous chemicals, HydroFluoric acid (HF) is used in massive quantities in only 2 California refineries, in Torrance and Wilmington. The refineries claim a chemical they add to HF makes it safe. But it’s too little to make a difference. “Modified” HydroFluoric acid (MHF) is just as deadly as HF. If released, it forms a ground-hugging cloud that can drift for miles, causing death and injury. The refineries’ other mitigation measures, like water sprays and barriers, are also ineffective. Mass casualties can result from an MHF release — wind direction determines who dies.
