Don’t Let Cherokee County Shelter Euthanize Animals for Space

The Issue

For the first time ever, Cherokee County Animal Shelter may be forced to euthanize healthy, adoptable animals — not because they’re dangerous or sick, but because they’ve run out of space.

That is heartbreaking. And it is preventable.

Shelter Director Kelly Ellis and her team have worked tirelessly to avoid euthanasia-for-space. But with the Humane Society of Cherokee County closed and intake rising fast, they’re at a breaking point. Without immediate help from county leaders, animals will pay the price with their lives.

These dogs and cats aren’t statistics — they’re family waiting to happen. And right now, the only thing standing between them and the unthinkable is emergency support from our local government.

We call on the Cherokee County Council to take urgent action by:

  • Providing emergency funds to expand shelter capacity or extend hours for adoption events;
  • Allocating temporary staffing or volunteer support to keep operations running safely at scale;
  • Exploring partnerships with nearby county shelters, rescues, or mobile foster networks;
  • Committing to a no-kill approach and working transparently with the community on long-term solutions.

The shelter is doing its part. Volunteers are stepping up. Donations are coming in. But we need our elected leaders to act — fast.

Every day without help puts more animals at risk. Euthanasia for space was never part of Cherokee County’s promise to its animals. Let’s not let it become the new normal.
