Don’t Let Chains Replace Our Community Cafés – Stop Greggs on Northdown Road

The Issue

Our independent high street is under threat.

A national chain, Greggs, is seeking planning permission to open in the heart of one of Thanet’s most proudly independent shopping areas on Northdown Road in Margate. This isn’t just another shop opening — it’s a direct threat to the small cafés, bakeries, and family-run businesses that give our town its character, create local jobs, and keep money in our community.

Big chains can undercut prices, outspend on marketing, and survive losses that independents simply can’t. Our local traders can’t compete with that. If this goes ahead, we risk empty shops, lost livelihoods, and the slow erosion of everything that makes our high street unique.

Once independents are gone, they’re gone for good.

Thanet District Council must stand with local people, not big corporations. We need them to protect small businesses, defend local jobs, and preserve the heart and soul of our town.

If you care about independent shops, local jobs, and a thriving community — sign this petition today.

Together we can send a clear message: support local, protect our high street, and say NO to this application.

With deepest love and thanks, all the independent shops on Northdown Road x
