A Constructive Alternative: Open-Source Freedom for End-of-Life Vehicles

If maintaining proprietary servers for legacy vehicles like the Ampera-e and Bolt EV is no longer financially viable for GM, we propose a highly sustainable, zero-cost server solution for the manufacturer: Open-Source Protocol Redirection.
The vehicle already possesses the necessary 4G LTE hardware, telematics modules, and internal CAN-bus access. Through a final, one-time software update, GM could simply allow owners to manually configure the telematics server settings (APN, Server URL, and Credentials) within the infotainment system.
By enabling the car to point toward secure, independent, and community-maintained open-source servers (such as the Open Vehicle Monitoring System - OVMS), GM would completely eliminate its own server maintenance, licensing, and operational costs. At the same time, this would grant owners the "Right to Repair" their digital connectivity without risking dangerous hardware modifications.
This is a win-win scenario that protects GM's budget while honoring environmental sustainability and customer loyalty.
