For more than 12 years, Lyon County Animal Services in Silver Springs, Nevada has never had to euthanize a healthy dog for lack of space. That streak is now in danger.

The shelter has room for 44 dogs. Right now it is housing 69, with more than 60 more waiting to get in. Dogs are arriving faster than they can be adopted or reclaimed.

"We are absolutely devastated and heartbroken because, for the first time in over 12 years, we may have to start euthanizing for space and no longer be a no kill shelter," according to a statement from Lyon County.

That means healthy, adoptable dogs could be killed simply because there is nowhere to put them.

The Lyon County Board of Commissioners can direct emergency funding toward temporary kennel space, staffing, and rescue transport partnerships right now, before that happens.

Local rescues like Res-Que and WARF are already stepping up to foster dogs, but they cannot solve this alone.
