The Issue

As the old saying goes, "Don't fix what isn't broken."

We all know and love the famous Disney attraction, the Haunted Mansion. Many fans have come to the Disney Resorts to ride the famous tour through the spooky house occupied by nine-hundred and ninety-nine happy haunts, while holding a vacancy for one more haunt. Even if you've never been to the parks, I can make a safe bet you're at least familiar with the ride itself and how it goes. You start your experience in the foyer where you're soon ushered into a room containing four seemingly innocent portraits, but as the room stretches with you "trapped" inside, the portraits also "stretch" to show there's more to them than you thought. Because there's supposedly no way out of the stretching room, the Ghost Host jokingly suggests you could take his way out of the room. Cue the lights going out, the ceiling disappearing to reveal a corpse swaying from the rafters, dangling from a rope wrapped around its neck.

I myself am a fan of the ride and have been for years since I first visited Disney World back in 1998. The ride itself had gone through many changes at the parks over the years since they opened to welcome millions of “foolish mortals”. Some of these changes have either enhanced the ride or been very questionable. One change I am not okay with is the potential removal of the Ghost Host’s hanging corpse from the cupola of the stretching room in the ride’s pre-show. For many years, there have been rumors going around that the folks at Walt Disney Imagineering were looking at getting rid of the corpse from the pre-show. Once again, as confirmed by Imagineer Kim Irvine in the following article from the LA Times, they are still looking into it, citing that “We’re still looking at that. That one is complicated, structurally. ... One thing at a time.”

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I believe removing this element would strip away a part of the ride's dark humor and unnecessarily "sanitize" an iconic attraction. While the sight of the hanging corpse might be bothersome to some people, including those who lost their loved ones or friends to suicide, I have never seen an issue with the corpse in the pre-show.

Since its opening in 1969 at Disneyland, the Haunted Mansion has been known for its eerie setting and dark comedic elements, the hanging corpse in the stretching room being one of them. It adds to the attraction's mystique and intention of providing a spine-chilling experience whilst remaining within the realm of humor. This is a key reason why the HAUNTED MANSION continues to be one of the most iconic attractions in Disney parks around the globe.

This is not a call for preservation of what might be seen as inappropriateness, but rather a stand against unnecessary alterations that may disrupt the original spirit and humor of the attraction. After all, being haunted is all about embracing the darker and humorous side of fear.

Therefore, I urge fans of the Haunted Mansion, Disney and everyone who appreciates originality in creativity to sign this petition. Let's ensure the preservation and continuation of the unique experience that the Haunted Mansion ride brings - hanging corpse and all.
