Don't Cut SF Adult Hockey League Teams and Keep Start Times No Later than 11pm
The Issue
For years, I've been a part of the San Francisco Adult Hockey League at Yerba Buena Ice Arena, playing alongside teammates who have grown into an extended family of sorts. This league allows players to bond over a shared love of hockey and stay active in a community that unites people from various backgrounds. Recently, I was shocked to learn that the ice rink, and specifically the Adult Hockey League, is going through significant changes, including removing a number of adult hockey teams and potentially dismantling the one I've been a part of more than 8 years.
Additionally, the league is considering pushing some game start times later than 11pm, a change that would severely affect not only me, but every adult who plays hockey at Yerba Buena. Currently, games that start at 11 pm already stretch a player’s ability to manage work the next day, time with family, and simply to get a good night’s sleep. A later start time of 11:30 pm is simply impractical for many who need to maintain a balance between work, life, and their passion for hockey. We need to maintain the integrity of the league intact, supporting players who dedicate their evenings to this sport and maintain the accessibility for its members by keeping start times reasonable.
San Francisco is also a hub of diversity and activity. To that end, the Adult Hockey League embodies these values by providing an inclusive and vibrant environment for people of all skill levels and walks of life. By cutting teams and changing game times to an unmanageable slot, the league risks alienating these loyal players and significantly reducing participation, which is clearly detrimental to the community spirit we've all worked so hard to create.
We urge the league organizers to reconsider any plans to cut teams and to ensure that the game start times remain no later than 11pm. Let's keep all 30 teams intact and respect the schedules of adult players who are contributing to a strong, thriving sports community in San Francisco.
