But now, part of that tradition is at risk.

San Francisco’s Department of Emergency Management has proposed cutting its $100,000 annual contribution to Fleet Week as part of broader city budget reductions. That funding supports the disaster preparedness and public safety exercises that take place during the event. These exercises help local first responders coordinate with the Department of Defense and improve the city’s emergency readiness.

Fleet Week will not be canceled entirely if the funding is cut. The Blue Angels are still expected to perform, and the San Francisco Fleet Week Association is working to raise private funds. However, without city support, critical safety components of the event could be reduced or eliminated. Public safety, logistics, and long-term sustainability are all at stake.
