What is animal abuse?

The crime of causing bodily harm, misery, or death to an animal—typically one that is tame—beyond what is necessary for standard correction is known as animal abuse or animal cruelty. The animal may have suffered, died, or been put in grave risk of dying due to negligence that was so heinous (with holding food and water).

According to Section 6 Republic Act 8485 

It shall be unlawful for any person to torture any animal, to neglect to provide adequate care, sustenance of shelter, or maltreat any animal or to subject any dog or horse to dogfights or horse fights, kill or cause or procure to be tortured or deprived of adequate care, sustenance or shelter, or maltreat or use the same in research or experiments not expressly authorized by the Committee on Animal Welfare.

For subjecting any animal to cruelty, maltreatment, or neglect without resulting in its death or impairing its ability to exist on its own, a penalty of six months to a year in jail or a fine of no more than 30,000 pesos is possible.
