Stop the Development of Haddow Park

Stop the Development of Haddow Park

The Issue

Haddow Park is the heart of our neighbourhood, Haddow.  Edmonton City Council is planning on implementing The First Place Home Ownership Program in our neighbourhood by placing a development on the Separate surplus school site in our park.  In 2006, Edmonton City Council had this land rezoned without public consultation.

The following is an excerpt from the Municipal Government Act.

Disposal of municipal and school reserve

674(1) Despite section 70, if

(a)  a council wishes to sell, lease or otherwise dispose of municipal reserve or community services reserve, or

(b)  a council and a school board wish to sell, lease or otherwise dispose of municipal and school reserve,

a public hearing must be held in accordance with section 230 and must be advertised in accordance with section 606.

Twenty surplus school sites around Edmonton were exempted from the above process.

Our community is upset that we didn’t and still don't have a voice in what is happening to our park.  Over a thousand children live in our neighbourhood of which over 900 are school eligible. These children are either bussed or driven to schools outside of the neighbourhood.  Over 500 children use the park for soccer each spring and summer.  Every year our community league hosts a very popular Family New Year's Eve Party in Haddow Park.  Families walk, bike, exercise in and around the park every single day.  It is truly a place where families and neighbours gather.  Adding higher-density townhomes will have several negative effects on our community such as:  permanent loss of green space, increase in traffic, decrease of property values, loss of soccer fields, etc.

Please join with us and help save Haddow Park, the heart of our neighbourhood!  Together we can make a difference!
