Con questa petizione, chiediamo alla American Philosophical Society, illustre accademia fondata a Filadelfia da Benjamin Franklin nel 1743, di riconoscere Domenico Cirillo tra i propri soci, a far data dal 15 aprile 1768, in luogo dell'ignoto "Professor Famitz". 

La nomina a socio di Cirillo, medico, naturalista e patriota della Repubblica napoletana del 1799, fu proposta dal medico di Filadelfia John Morgan, che aveva molto probabilmente sentito parlare di Cirillo a Napoli durante il proprio soggiorno del 1764.

Il 3 novembre 1767, il Console britannico a Napoli, Isaac Jamienau, inviò una lettera a Morgan, invitandolo ad avviare una corrispondenza con “My Family Physician … professor of botany here to whom this university in oblig’d for the introduction of Linneas’ System’ (il mio medico di famiglia …professore di botanica qui [a Napoli], al quale questa università è grata per aver introdotto il sistema di classificazione di Linneo).

Morgan deve aver riconosciuto in tale descrizione la figura di Cirillo, che era stato titolare dal 1760 della cattedra di botanica presso l’Università di Napoli e vi aveva introdotto la tassonomia del naturalista svedese Carlo Linneo. Morgan propose perciò la nomina di Cirillo come socio dell’Accademia di Filadelfia, inoltrando alla stessa la lettera di Jamineau quale prova della fama internazionale di cii godeva Cirillo. 

Chi si occupò di dare seguito a tale proposta, però, deve aver frainteso le parole di Jamineau: ritenendo di aver letto “Mr Famitz Physician” invece di “My Family Physician”, procedette all’iscrizione, in data 15 aprile 1768, di un ignoto ‘Professor Famitz’, residente a Napoli, del quale, a differenza di Cirillo, non si ha alcun riscontro nelle principali società scientifiche del tempo. 

All’oscuro di tale errore materiale, Morgan diede notizia a Cirillo della propria elezione, il che trova conferma nella lettera di ringraziamento di Cirillo che fu letta corso della riunione dell’American Philosophical Society del 16 gennaio 1769, come risulta dai verbali di tale riunione:

“…and also a letter [was read] from D. Cirillo of Naples to Doctor J. Morgan thanking his for having proposed him a Member of the Society and promising to do anything in his power that may be of use to the ends for which the society was instituted” (fu inoltre [letta] una lettera di D. Cirillo di Napoli al dottor J. Morgan in cui il primo lo si ringraziava per averlo proposto come socio della Society e si impegnava a fare qualsiasi cosa in proprio potere potesse essere utile per il perseguimento dei fini per cui la Society era stata fondata).

Tale ipotesi storiografica, che sviluppa quanto affermato dagli studiosi Antonio Pace e Whitfield Jenks Bell, è corroborata dall'esame della lettera di Jaminau, reperita grazie all’aiuto del personale della Historical Medical Library del College of Physicians of Philadelphia.

Il confronto con altri passi del medesimo documento, sembra confermare che il Console britannico non scrisse “Famitz”, ma “Family”: la penultima lettera appare infatti una “L”, in quanto, a differenza delle altre “T” contenute nel documento, è priva del trattino orizzontale; l’ultima lettera sembra poi una “Y” e non una "Z", come si evince dal confronto con le ultime lettere delle parole “Botany” e “university”, contenute nella medesima frase.

Pertanto, chiediamo alla American Philosophical Society di rettificare le informazioni relative all'iscrizione del proprio socio n. 188, eletto il 15 aprile 1768, come segue: “Domenico Cirillo. Naturalist, Physician, and Lawmaker. Born in Grumo Nevano on April 10, 1739. Professor of Botany and Medicine at the University of Naples; Physician at Ospedale degli Incurabili in Naples; President of the Legislative Committee of the Neapolitan Republic. Executed by order of the King of Naples in Piazza Mercato on October 29, 1799.”

Questa petizione è stata elaborata e presentata da Amedeo Arena, professore ordinario presso l'Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II e De Gasperi Fellow presso gli Archivi Storici dell'Istituto Universitario Europeo, in occasione dell'incontro "Cirillo, Medico", tenutosi il 17 dicembre 2022 presso l'Ex Ospedale della Pace di Napoli. Tra i sostenitori istituzionali di questa iniziativa si annoverano il Museo delle Arti sanitarie e Storia della Medicina di Napoli e l'Accademia Filangieri Della Porta, organizzatori dell'incontro su Cirillo.

With this petition, we ask the American Philosophical Society, the illustrious learned society founded in Philadelphia by Benjamin Franklin in 1743, to acknowledge the election of Domenico Cirillo as one of its members, as from April 15, 1768, in lieu of the unknown “Professor Famitz".

The appointment as partner of Cirillo, an illustrious physician, naturalist and patriot of the Neapolitan republic of 1799, was proposed by the Philadelphia doctor John Morgan, who had probably heard of Cirillo during his sojourn in Naples in 1764.

On November 3, 1767, the British Consul in Naples sent a letter to Morgan, inviting him to start a correspondence with "My Family Physician ... professor of botany here to whom this university in oblig'd for the introduction of Linneas' System'.

Morgan must have inferred that Jamineau was referring to Cirillo, as he had held the chair of botany at the University of Naples since 1760 and had introduced the taxonomy of the Swedish naturalist Carl Nilsson Linnaeus. So he proposed Cirillo’s appointment as a member of the Academy by forwarding Jamineau's letter as evidence of Cirillo’s international reputation.

However, it is submitted that those who followed up on Morgan’s recommendation misunderstood Jamineau's words: believing they had read "Mr Famitz Physician" instead of "My Family Physician", they enrolled, on April 15, 1768, an unknown 'Professor Famitz', resident in Naples, who, unlike Cirillo, was completely unheard of in the most prominent academic societies of the time.

Unaware of this clerical error, Morgan must have informed Cirillo of his election, as confirmed by Cirillo’s thank-you letter to Morgan, which was read at the American Philosophical Society meeting of January 16, 1769, as noted in the minutes of that meeting:

“…and also a letter [was read] from D. Cirillo of Naples to Doctor J. Morgan thanking his for having proposed him a Member of the Society and promising to do anything in his power that me be of use to the ends for which the society was instituted”

This historiographical hypothesis, which builds upon the work of Antonio Pace and Whitfield Jenks Bell, is corroborated by the
examination of Jaminau's letter, retrieved with the help of the staff of the Historical Medical Library of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.

A comparison with other passages of the same document confirms that the British Consul did not write "Famitz", but "Family": the penultimate letter in fact appears as an "L", since, unlike the other "T"s in the same document, it lacks the horizontal dash; the last letter looks like a "Y" and not a "Z", as it appears from the comparison with the last letters of the words "Botany" and "university", contained in the same sentence.

In view of the above, we ask the American Philosophical Society to rectify the information relating to the enrollment of its member no. 188, elected on 15 April 1768, as follows: “Domenico Cirillo. Naturalist, Physician, and Lawmaker. Born in Grumo Nevano on April 10, 1739. Professor of Botany and Medicine at the University of Naples; Physician at Ospedale degli Incurabili in Naples; President of the Legislative Committee of the Neapolitan Republic. Executed by order of the King of Naples in Piazza Mercato on October 29, 1799.”

This petition was drafted and made public by Amedeo Arena, Full Professor at the University of Naples Federico II and Visiting Fellow at the Historical Archives of the European University Institute, at the meeting "Cirillo, Medico", held on 17 December 2022 at the former Ospedale della Pace in Naples.
