There are an estimated 1,500 bats living in a local building slated for demolition. While Council has agreed to postpone removal of the building until the Fall I am concerned that an opportunity will be missed to preserve some great habitat here in Kitimat. 
It is clear the bats have been able to thrive and I do not believe it will be possible to make up for the lost habitat; no matter what we do the viability of the colony will be compromised relative to its current numbers.  Whatever unique circumstances exist at this site it seems a natural haven for the winged creatures in a time when bats as a species are under threat from various circumstances, such as loss of habitat and white-nose syndrome.
A big thank you to Council for recognizing the importance of the situation and postponing their plans, but I would hope we could save this important place for the bats' safety and survival.
