Give A Huge Budget To Provide Medications and Enlarge Healthcare Facilities in Rural Area
The Issue
Healthcare in the Philippines is variable, ranging in quality from excellent to dire. Hospitals in the major cities are generally of a high standard, while rural areas lack infrastructure and investment. Healthcare is provided through both private and public hospitals in the Philippines. Local medical staff are well trained, especially in big cities. Many have studied and practiced medicine overseas, and they also speak English. While cities do have healthcares that have enough medications which can accommodate many patients, rural areas on the other hand, lacks medications and their healthcare is not that great either.
Doctors at public hospitals in the Philippines are well-trained, although equipment and facilities may not be up to the standard of private institutions. Access to public healthcare in the Philippines remains an issue, particularly in rural areas. The public healthcare system is delivered through public health and primary healthcare centers linked to peripheral barangay (local town) health centers. There is almost about 40% of the hospitals in the Philippines that are public. As Rural Areas Healthcare lacks a lot compared to Urban Areas, the medications alongside the small capacity of patients that can be treated are the problems that they are currently facing. There is also an undeniably shortage of medications in Rural Area Healthcare. According to Philstar (2016), "the World Health Organization (WHO) classifies the Philippines as one of the top countries where less than 30 percent of its population have regular access to essential drugs. This means that almost 70 percent of Filipinos are deprived of the medicines they need for faster health recovery." were there is a higher possibility that Rural Areas are the ones being deprived of the medicines needed.
Recently, President Rodrigo Duterte signed the Universal Health Care Act, in which it would provide health care coverage for all Filipinos. The funds from this Act which he recently been signed are pooled from the incremental sin tax collections, charity fund from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), income from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), premium contribution of members, annual appropriations of the Department of Health (DOH), and government subsidy to PhilHealth. However, as this was just has recently been signed by the President, some rural areas may still lack medications and still have a small facilities. Having a quality healthcare with enough amount of medications which can accommodate and accessible for rural folks would probably help them.
In signing this petition, you are pleading to the Department of Health and the Government to increase and provide a huge budget for the medications and enlarge the medical facilities of rural area, so that rural folks will have an access to a quality health care.
