Sign to stop a working dog from being rehomed!
The Issue
Please show your support by signing this petition to prevent the unnecessary rehousing of a working dog away from her family without just cause!
Our family has supported the Dogs For Good Charity in Banbury for over 8 years by providing a home to a Black Labrador, named Siren by the charity. She is legally owned by the charity but Siren lives with my Mum and two little brothers. Siren attends workshops hosted by the charity to aid in the personal development of autistic children. The charity cover any veterinary costs and provide her food in exchange for us taking Siren to her workshops once a week and providing a loving home.
Siren is now 8 years old and it was originally agreed that she would be retired at this age to see out her last few years. As a result of Covid over the past 18 months, Siren has not been able to attend her regular workshops.
To offer a brief insight into the Lady of Leisure lifestyle that Siren leads. She runs 2 miles with my Mum every morning before leaving for work. En-route to work Siren is dropped off at a friends house, where she spends the day Mon-Fri, so she is not left alone. Siren is walked at lunch and then again in the evening after collection. I also take her out for cross country runs and she wears a pit-pat on her collar to measure her daily exercise output. Siren is without doubt living her best life with our family and we could spam you all for hours with photos of long walks and pictures at the top of Summit’s we’ve climbed.
The reason for this petition is that the Vet at the Dogs For Good Charity Banbury training centre has raised concerns regarding Siren's weight fluctuations over the past few years. Siren is often at her target weight, but she has been known to fluctuate to the small increase of 8% over her target weight, before coming back down. Lockdown and restrictions on our physical activities have played a part in these minor fluctuations. We can all relate to a correlation with our increasing age and the struggle to shake off few extra pounds, especially after 3 lockdowns!
Due to the small 8% weight gain and the fluctuations between being on target weight and up to just 8% over, Siren was removed from the family home by the trainers at the Dogs For Good Charity Banbury. Siren has been in their care for the past 2 months. A decision was made on the 22nd of September 2021 that for Siren’s mental and physical well-being, she will be immediately rehoused. Despite the fact that we’ve had her since she was a puppy with no other cause for concern.
This is where we need your help!!
If you agree that an increase in weight of just 8% in an 8 year old Labrador, who is near retirement, is not just cause to warrant permanent rehousing for her own mental and physical well-being, then please sign the petition!!
If you also agree that it would cause far greater distress for Siren to be permanently removed, from the only family she has ever known, to a new family miles away just to lower her weight by 8%. Baring in mind that Siren is at retirement age, so she will not be attending workshops or working for the charity moving forward, then please sign the petition!!
For reference Siren weighed 25.3kg in 2015 and 2 months ago she weighed 27.9kg. An increase of just 10% over 6 years. Believe it or not dogs do actually grow in size over time and and an increase in weight is completely natural. Every person who knows our family and the life Siren leads can't believe that the option for rehousing is even being considered.
We have 2 weeks from the 22nd of September 2021 to appeal and present our case to the Dogs For Good Charity Banbury as to why Siren should remain in our care for the remainder of her life. Please sign this petition to show your support and to show that the Dogs For Good Charity are enforcing one of the strangest decisions even other Veterinary professionals can't justify. With enough signatures we can revert this decision and Siren can enjoy her retirement with her family.
Thanks for your support,
Kristian, Roisin, Finlay & James.
