Dogs Deserve More Than a Backyard: Update NSW Laws for Modern Suburbs
The issue
Across modern suburbs in New South Wales, thousands of dogs are spending their lives confined to tiny backyards with little stimulation, exercise, or human interaction.
Housing developments have changed dramatically. Many new blocks are now barely larger than a double garage, yet anyone can still buy a dog with no checks, no education requirements, and no standards for daily exercise.
Under the current
Companion Animals Act 1998
owners are required to provide basic care such as food, water, and shelter. But the law does not address the psychological and social needs of dogs.
Dogs are intelligent, social animals. Long-term isolation and boredom can lead to anxiety, behavioural problems, and poor welfare.
Even under the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979, it is extremely difficult for authorities such as
RSPCA NSW
to intervene unless a dog is visibly starving, injured, or severely neglected.
