Doctors for Repeal of the 8th Amendment

We, as doctors and medical students, support a referendum to Repeal the 8th Amendment of the Irish Constitution.

Abortion is a common procedure in the reproductive lives of many women in Ireland. International evidence and many reputable organisations such as the WHO and UN acknowledge that restricting access to abortion is associated with significant harms to the health of women. We believe that doctors should be free to practice evidence-based medicine, without the threat of criminalisation. We believe that women should have access to safe abortion services in Ireland, without having to travel abroad to access healthcare.

The 8th Amendment fails Irish women. Best medical practice should not be prevented by the Irish Constitution.

All Irish citizens should be given the option to #repealthe8th through a referendum.
