Kesha has been fighting a defamation lawsuit from Doctor Luke ever since she brought forth allegations of sexual assault against Doctor Luke in 2014. She requests in her own lawsuit to be released from her record deal with Dr. Luke, claiming his alleged actions are a breach of contract.  Recently unsealed documents confirm that Kesha informed her managers in 2005 that she had been sexually abused by Doctor Luke and did not want to work with him, years before she achieved any professional success. Her case is still in litigation, and she is still under the control of Doctor Luke. 

At this time of writing, Kesha is unable to perform features on anyone else's records, create any live recordings, sing the national anthem on TV, or put up an acoustic cover on streaming platforms without Dr. Luke's explicit permission. This has significantly harmed her income from her profession, which is making music. She has lost a large amount of brand deals, promotions and record opportunities because of this, as well as emotional damage resulting from these lawsuits. 

Because Kesha is signed to Gottwald's publishing company, she is also unable to make a living writing songs for other people, which had been a significant source of her income. Her manager, David Sonenberg, tried to distance Kesha from Doctor Luke by attempting to negotiate a record deal with Warner Brothers on Kesha's behalf, which was unsuccessful. If Kesha were to write a song with another artist, any profit would directly benefit her abuser.
