The monument in Huntsville has thankfully been removed from the area outside the county courthouse. It has been relocated to Maple Hill cemetery, which is owned by the City of Huntsville. This was a compromise, but in the current moment of history, I don't believe we should be making compromises over symbols of systemic racism. This monument has represented racism, hated, and bigotry for over a century. It does not belong on hallowed ground owned by the City. Its current location in the Confederate section casts a stain on the graves of those soldiers buried there and on all "residents" of Maple Hill and their families. I am calling on the Huntsville City Counsel and Mayor Tommy Battle to find a proper final resting place for this devisive piece of propaganda. My suggestion is the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, if they will have it. Any other museum dedicated to civil rights would be equally acceptable.
