Do not pay Angela Davis $12,000 to speak at Texas Tech

The Issue

Angela Davis is described by Texas Tech University as a social activist and professor emerita at the University of California-Santa Cruz.

Davis will be paid $12,000 to come speak at Texas Tech as part of the African American History Month lectures. The money will come from various areas of Texas Tech, such as, the President's Office, the Women's Studies Program, the Department of History, the Provost's Office and the Division of Institutional Diversity.

Davis became famous in the 1970's. She fled from police for two months after she was charged with aggravated kidnapping and first-degree murder. She served 18 months in prison, and when she was released she continued her life as a Communist activist and teacher. Tech College Republicans encourages individuals to do additional research on Angela Davis and formulate their own opinions.

We believe that she goes against everything that a proud American stands for. It is for these reasons that we believe our University should not spend $12,000 on Angela Davis.

Recommendations: Mia Love, Condolezza Rice, Gwen Ifill

We ask the Texas Tech University community, whether student, faculty, staff, or alumni that you sign the petition to help us fight for Freedom. Tech College Republicans are for the Freedom of Speech, but do not support Texas Tech financially backing Angela Davis.
