Do not cancel "Temporary Protection for Myanmar refugees"

Do not cancel "Temporary Protection for Myanmar refugees"
The Issue
Dear President Donald J. Trump,
The Burmese community respectfully appeals for your decision to cancel the temporary asylum protection for approximately 10,000 Myanmar nationals residing in the United States. This request is rooted in our pursuit of international protection following the brutal military coup that took place on February 1, 2021.
The decision made by the Department of Homeland Security characterizes Myanmar as a safe country; however, the reality is that the nation is currently embroiled in a civil war, with the junta regime steadfastly refusing to relinquish its illegal military authority.
The relentless bombing of towns and villages, coupled with the targeting of innocent civilians, has become a grim daily reality in the war-torn Southeast Asia nation.
The junta regime has committed egregious crimes, resulting in the deaths of thousands of its own citizens, engaging in aerial assaults on towns and villages, and systematically targeting innocent civilians on a daily basis.
The ongoing insecurity and the hazardous political climate in Myanmar are well-documented by reputable media outlets, research institutions, and United Nations agencies.
Furthermore, the junta's announcement of a planned election appears to be a calculated strategy aimed at mitigating international condemnation of its unlawful coup. On the ground, the junta actively arrests citizens who express dissent, persecuting and executing those who oppose their military rule.
In light of these grave circumstances, we, the undersigned members of the Burmese diaspora in the United States, kindly urge you to reconsider this decision and extend greater protection to these vulnerable individuals from Myanmar. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
