Grandparents raising children without State assistance for childcare

The Issue

My Daughter was killed on June 18th by her children father whom also killed himself; leaving 4 children ages 3, 4, 4, and 10. They are my grandchildren whom I have been caring for since this tragedy. I am a full time worker and needed childcare for all 3 children under 5. I had not legally adopted them nor was their legal guardian. I applied for State assistance mainly childcare and was denied immediately due to my income! I was told also I wouldn’t qualify for food stamps and given a Sorry. I was not asked about any of my living expenses and even if I could take care of the children. I’ve contacted State representatives and was only told yes you are over the income level. The laws have to change! I was also informed that I could take them to children’s services and they would become ward of the state only to risk loosing them to the system. But another family can adopt them and get monthly allowance, healthcare, and childcare payments for taking them in. But I’m the maternal Grandmother whom has cared for them and gets nothing! The laws has to change to help families in these type of situations where trauma has happened and there are no immediate resources for kinship families trying to care for children!
