The Issue

Protect Historic Stillwater and Ditch the Lights!

Who is impacted?

The recent installation of temporary traffic lights on County Route 521 in Stillwater, NJ is a blight on our historic, rural community.  These lights, placed directly in front of the landmark Bonnie Brook Farm, endanger residents and visitors. They cause traffic congestion, pollution, and disrupt the peace of this cherished area known as "Bobcat Alley." The owners of Bonnie Brook Farm are especially burdened by the lights – facing dangerous traffic conditions and the unwelcome transformation of their property into "Stillwater's Red Light District."

What is at stake?

If these disruptive lights remain, we risk:

Safety Hazards: The lights create confusion, not order. Without proper monitoring, drivers may disobey signals, increasing accident risk for all.
Environmental Damage: Idling cars, noise pollution, and litter threaten the delicate natural beauty of this historic area.
Loss of Character: Our tranquil, rural town is marred by an urban eyesore, damaging both its charm and the legacy of Bonnie Brook Farm.

Why is now the time to act?

Rash Decision: The County's hasty solution lacks foresight and community input. We demand a common-sense, permanent solution that doesn't sacrifice our lifestyle or safety.
Growing Outrage: The community outcry is clear. We must channel this momentum to force immediate revision of this ill-conceived plan.
Accountability: The Sussex County Engineering Department must be held accountable for this detrimental decision and work with residents and the Township on a better, safer solution.
Our Demand:

We, the undersigned, urge the Sussex County Engineering Department and Stillwater Township to immediately remove the temporary traffic lights on County Route 521 and to collaborate with the community to find a solution that protects Bonnie Brook Farm, prioritizes safety, and preserves the historic character of Stillwater.
