Stop the implementation of the FVRD Animal Control Program and keep the current Animal Control Services Contract in effect

The Issue

As a citizen of Mission, taxpayer and dog owner who pays licensing fees annually, I believe I should have a say if and when a program such as this is to be implemented or not. I have dealt with the current poundkeeper on various occasions and am confident that this is the person the District of Mission should continue to contract Animal Control Services with. I have found and picked up strays numerous times, before and after hours of operation, and have had the poundkeeper come to my home almost immediately, on her own time and pick up dogs and take them back to the LOCAL shelter. It is important to keep the shelter in Mission! I understand that the license fees will drop, but am concerned with the new nuisance and aggressive dog license categories...who decides whether a dog falls into this category..It seems they could label any dog a nuisance just to get higher licence fees. I have a hard time believing that anyone will care for the dogs the way the current poundkeeper and her staff have. I have found at least a dozen strays in Mission in the past few years and have been so happy with the level of care and professionalism from Animal Control. I believe the people paying the licensing fees should be the ones deciding who should be looking after their dogs if they accidentally get out, and can honestly say I wouldn't want my dog in a van all day and then taken to Chilliwack. I am happy with the current animal control situation...and I am sure even with the money you say the district will save switching to the FVRD... We as taxpayers won't have our taxes lowered.
