Scrap the Road Plan to Kondamali Hilltop By Cutting Virgin Forest of Koraput District
The Issue
From reliable sources its learnt that the district administration has plans to construct an all weather road from the plains of Jeypore subdivision(550-600 metres from MSL) up to the village of Ramogodo-Tadopani which are situated on top of the Kondamali hill and nearly at an elevation of 1000 metres from MSL. The village cluster of Ramogodo, Tadopani, Kota and Kenduguda is home to around 500 inhabitants in around 100 households as per 2011 census. The proposal to connect the villages with a road is an ambitious one, at the same time it is a plan which lacks farsightedness and is Environmentally Insensitive one. It has been learnt that the forest department and revenue department have already carried out a joint survey to assess the land requirement and extent of tree felling required for the completion of the project. If constructed the road will require cutting of 5000-6000 full grown trees of a mature dense forest which must have taken at least 50-60 years or more to grow to this stage.
We best hope that the district administration will put the true interest of our people and fragile ecology of our district at the forefront of priority and shelve this environmentally damaging project. If the project is not scrapped by the district administration we the people of Koraput will not hesitate to resort to agitation and legal recourse.
