Diversity in Admissions Proposal for PS9’s Gifted & Talented Program

The Issue

Because there aren’t enough seats for every child who qualifies for G&T in New York City to attend a G&T program, every year there is a waitlist of students for PS9’s G&T program. Despite the demand for PS9’s G&T program, there is a shared sentiment among many parents of G&T students at PS9 that more should be done to improve the program’s diversity and ensure equitable access to resources for all students at PS9. Towards that end, it is proposed that PS9 adopt a Diversity in Admissions screen that would give priority for 30 percent of kindergarten and 1st grade G&T seats to applicants who are either eligible for free or reduced price lunch (based on family income) or live in temporary housing and/or public housing.
