Return Pirates of the Caribbean to its former glory

Return Pirates of the Caribbean to its former glory
The Issue
Pirates of the Caribbean has gone through two major changes since it first opened: the infamous politically correct changes of 1997, and the more recent movie changes. I am proposing in this petition that both those changes be repealed and this historic ride returned to its former glory. Yes, that means put the girl back in the barrel. I know, I know, I can already hear the few of you who might disagree with me now. I'm sure you're trotting out that tired mantra, "Disneyland is not a museum," but wait, isn't it sometimes? Pirates of the Caribbean was the last ride that Walt himself worked on and it is often referred to as the ride by which all others are judged. It's true that Walt wanted the park to be a living thing that was always growing and changing but surely that doesn't mean that we should blindly accept all changes, good or bad, especially in this post-Walt era. The additions of very lifelike figures from the movie do not enhance the ride experience. On the contrary, they are so jarringly different from the original Marc Davis aesthetics that one is pulled out of the fantasy of the ride. I understand that the movie franchise has been very profitable for Disney but Walt himself said, “Disneyland is not just another amusement park. It’s unique and I want it kept that way. Besides, you don’t work for a dollar – you work to create and have fun.” And let's not forget that the movies were based on the ride and not the other way around. Think about what that really means. How often has that happened? How many amusement park rides are so rich in art, story, and music that they inspire the cinema? Why then, have we cheapened that original beauty with the fleeting popularity of Johnny Depp's hipster mug? And let's not forget those politically correct changes from the '90s. If we are going to make this happen, we have to make sure we do it right. Let pirates be pirates! This ride was perfect when it started and we want it back! Let's bring back the real Pirates of the Caribbean. For those of you still sticking to that not-a-museum line, I'll leave you with another quote from Walt Disney, “I love the nostalgic myself. I hope we never lose some of the things of the past.” Yo-ho, yo-ho, a pirate's life for me!
