Disney World Needs to Let Go of Character Sightings and Flotillas
The Issue
On July 23rd, 2023, after appearing since February 15th, a meet and greet with Chip n Dale in their Rescue Rangers attire on Echo Lake, near the Indiana Jones stunt theater at Disney's Hollywood Studios was discontinued for no reason, and the very next day, their appearances went from a regular meet and greet back to their 2021-pandemic era spot near the Brown Derby restaurant on the lawn, where Donald & Daisy Duck were, socially distanced, these two chipmunks took a downgrade from showing off their swag from the 90's to just return to the picnic grounds, my thoughts on that exactly?
In 2021-22, it was acceptable as character meet and greets were still suspended at that time, and the characters were still distanced due to the pandemic, but when April 18th, 2022 came, meet and greets returned, but in phases, and the chipmunks were still distanced near the Brown Derby, and for my experience when I went, it was a nice experiment seeing the beloved chipmunks with their picnic basket and blanket, sometimes acorns for some fun in the park.
It all changed at the start of 2023, when they were moved from their sighting spot to near the Stunt Theater on the day after Valentine's Day, where the Rescue Rangers returned(especially after their Emmy award winning Disney Plus movie came out last year(to varying results and opinions), meeting with guests, especially those who grew up watching that awesome Disney Afternoon cartoon that has since become a cult favorite.
But unfortunately.., after only 158 days, something tragic and horrible happened, the chipmunks were forced to leave the Stunt Theater area, and lose their Rescue Rangers swag, only to be moved back for budgetary reasons...
To Hollywood Blvd, near the Brown Derby Restaurant, on the lawns near that eatery, with their acorns, picnic basket, and blanket..., DISTANCED, again, in 2023, where social distancing is no longer required on Walt Disney World property, and yet they're still doing this?
This is just frustrating that Chip n Dale had to be socially distanced again, especially since not everybody got to see them in their Rescue Rangers swag, and that this move was made in a post-social distancing world, when the other parks have since phased out character sighting spots(with a few rare exceptions), with Pooh Bear still catching butterflies with his net near Imagination!(although, I can't be too hard with Pooh), but the biggest upset was putting Chip n Dale back to their COVID-era spot where they play around with the statues of Joe from Soul and Flounder & Sebastian from The Little Mermaid, when character sightings are highly irrelevant in 2023.
Disney, please have Chip n Dale back on their spot on Echo Lake, near the Indiana Jones Stunt Show, in their Rescue Rangers attire, daily, not just for special events, not just for Moonlight Magic(NOT distanced, like they wrongfully did in 2022), not just for the new Jollywood Nights event, but 100% daily, 7 days a week, 365 days a year(except for closures due to hurricanes and stuff), and yet how do Fancy Nancy and Elena of Avalor still have meet and greets on WDW property, when those characters and their shows aren't as popular as they were when they were airing new episodes, these two rarely air on television anymore, these two aren't as popular on Disney Plus, as much as stuff like Bluey(who will never have any in park presence due to her NOT being a Disney-owned IP), they have little to zero merchandise of them sold in any store nowadays, and Disney has pretty much moved on from those shows, the Rescue Rangers have a bigger legacy for Disney than Elena or Nancy ever did, and that's why we need Chip n Dale moved back to Echo Lake, un-distanced, and for Disney to also phase out ALL remaining character sighting spots on WDW, especially the flotillas, who are forbidding all Animal Kingdom exclusive characters from returning to their old, pre-pandemic spots due to "popularity" like Scrooge McDuck from DuckTales, Pocahontas, Russell & Dug from Up, and Rafiki & Timon from Disney's animated champion of the 90's, The Lion King, they ALL need to return to meet guests and not be permanently limited to just be featured in a flotilla sighting that too many people love a ton. I mean, sightings and flotillas worked during a pandemic, but when the parks are slowly getting back to normal, they basically have little to no use nowadays
