Petition to dismiss Lauren Hill Academy teacher with disturbing social media post that promotes violence and anti-Palestinian sentiments

We have started this petition to express our shock and dismay with the English Montreal School Board at yet another disturbing incident, this time by a teacher at Lauren Hill Academy (LHA)

On February 17, 2024, Ms Stacey Kaufman, a faculty member at LHA, wrote a post that encouraged one of her Face Book friends to “Get in gear and get into Gaza!!". The post features a photo of the FB friend in military attire, presumably in Israel (screenshot of post is attached).

The post in question represents a flagrant violation of a teacher’s work ethic to be neutral, inclusive and most importantly to not promote violence. As concerned parents from diverse ethnicities we are horrified by the messaging that this post sends to our children and the society at large. In addition to this flagrant violation of basic work ethic, the post promotes anti-Palestinian rhetoric at a time in which tensions are running high. This post comes nearly 4 months after a brutal military campaign in Gaza where over 80% of the population is displaced, hungry, traumatized and over 30,000 have been killed, of whom more than half are children.

We call upon the EMSB and the Police to investigate this incident as a hate crime and a breach of the teacher’s work ethic and moral conduct towards her students. This post, which promotes the use of weapons, comes at a time in which Canada and other countries are discussing embargos on weapon exports to Israel due to its potential involvement in genocide in Gaza.

Given the diverse student body at LHA, which includes many Muslim and Palestinian students, such remarks are deeply troubling. They create an unsafe environment and go against the values of tolerance and respect that the school must uphold.

We urge the EMSB and LHA administration to investigate this matter promptly and send the correct message to all staff by dismissing and disciplining the teacher in question. It is essential to ensure that all students feel valued and protected within the school community.
