Discrimination Against Individuals W|Visible Tattoos and Facial Piercings in the Workplace
The Issue
As an individual who proudly showcases visible tattoos and facial piercings, I feel that I have been a victim of discrimination in the workplace. My body ink and piercings do not lessen my capabilities or work ethic, yet I'm unfairly judged on these physical attributes. In spite of the "Equal Opportunity" notices on hiring applications, many businesses, franchises, corporations, and non-profit organizations immediately disqualify individuals with visible tattoos and facial piercings, deeming them inappropriate in the corporate setup. Or obligating individuals to either take out their piercings or covering both, their piercings and tattoos due to the difficulty of finding a job that is not so judgmental and discriminatory as such. However, this approach defies the essence of 'don't judge a book by its cover'.
In 2025, 90% of the world's population boasts of visible body art or piercings. Yet, a considerable number of employers and organizations retain a dated mindset, failing to embrace this reality. Such an attitude not only undermines the principle of equal opportunity but also deprives these entities of potential great assets who might be overlooked due to their individualistic expressions.
It is high time we pushed for radical changes in such discriminative policies. This petition seeks an overhaul of these unfair practices to ensure equity and inclusion for all, beyond the peripheral judgments based on our choice of body art. Nobody should be denied equal employment opportunities due to their adornments. We implore all relevant stakeholders to apply non-discriminative hiring practices in recognition of individuality and freedom of expression. Will you stand with us?
