Put Truth in Shark Week
The Issue
Discovery Channel's "Shark Week" drew in 42 million viewers this year. 2014 reeled in the highest ratings for Shark week in it's 27 year history! If you take a look at the line-up of shows scheduled during Shark Week, it is very apparent that the series is fear-driven, as well as money-driven. Discovery Channel's slogan is that they are the worlds' #1 Nonfiction Media Company, and yet they have strayed from this when scheduling their line-up for Shark Week. Discovery Channel should be using its highest rated segment for the purpose to educate people on the reality of the fate of sharks in today's world. We are not asking that they change their entire line-up of shows, but in the midst of shows such as "Sharkageddon" and "Zombie Sharks", there needs to be a balance of public service announcements, or Discovery Channel backed shows about shark conservation and threats to the species. We need to be aware of the fact that 90% of the shark population is already extinct because of humans. 25 years from now, if there is a Shark Week, it will be running segments on an animal that is long extinct, unless we do our part to change that. Shark Week is the biggest event in the world solely focused on sharks. Discovery Channel has the power and position; therefore the responsibility to educate its viewers on the shark finning epidemic that is happening right now. Shark week is not focused enough on conservation and education, and it should be! After all, Discovery Channel is supposed to be representing nonfiction television. Together, lets hold Discovery Channel accountable to their mission statement and to re-think the purpose of Shark Week. Let's start defending these animals! Instead of watching intentionally misleading and fake documentaries, lets fight for real documentaies that educate, before it's too late!
