Discount Mental Health First Aid Course for students @ Curtin University, Bently

The issue

We are the Stress-Less Project, an independent body of health promotion undergraduates determined to reduce the impact of stress and anxiety amongst students at Curtin University. If you have ever felt stressed or anxious whilst at university, we strongly urge for your support. We are aiming to reduce the cost of the Mental Health First Aid Course and make it affordable for all students on campus. Help us, help you!

The general First Aid course is largely practised in workplaces and currently available to most students on campus through a small charge. It is highly common for someone to have a current first aid certificate. However not many people know how to effectively help someone who might be going through a difficult situation mentally and/or emotionally. By completing a Mental Health First Aid course, you build the necessary skills to appropriately manage and support somebody who is having mental health issues and know the right steps to help them seek assistance.

Mental Health is incredibly important, with almost 25% of people between the ages of 17-24 years old in 2016 experiencing symptoms of an anxiety disorder. This immediately categories this population at high risk of developing a mental illness. With many people using coping mechanisms such as ignoring the issue, not seeking friends or professional aid or even trying to sleep it off. More attention needs to be placed on how to help those affected.

Currently there is an online version of the Mental Health Course offered to Health Science Students free of charge. However, this does not apply to other science degrees. To all students the online modules are available for $50, however to complete the certificate, participants are required to undertake a 6-hour face to face session and then complete an online test. Once these three parts are completed you are accredited for three years.

We want your help to make sure you don’t miss out on helping somebody. Don’t wait til it's too late. Make sure you support the Stress-Less Project in making Mental Health First Aid affordable and stream line for ALL at Curtin University and not just the minority.
