The Issue

In 2024, when my son began his journey at Lakin Prep Academy, we were hopeful and optimistic about the educational opportunities ahead of him. However, that optimism quickly faded with the introduction of the Make Your Day Program. We initially thought this program would foster growth and discipline, but it has become apparent that its implementation is doing more harm than good.

The Make Your Day Program, adopted by Lakin Prep and other schools in the Littleton School District, was intended to encourage accountability and personal responsibility among students. Unfortunately, it has devolved into a punitive and demoralizing system that undermines students' self-esteem and motivation to learn. The program uses public shaming and isolation as disciplinary measures, creating an environment of fear rather than support.

Research shows that positive reinforcement and restorative practices are far more effective in promoting good behavior and academic success than negative reinforcement and punitive approaches. According to a study by the American Psychological Association, restorative practices can reduce incidences of bullying by 67% and improve overall student well-being. Yet, Make Your Day pursues an obsolete and counterproductive methodology.

Parents in our community have voiced their concerns during meetings, and teachers have expressed their struggles with the program, citing increased stress levels among students and a decrease in class participation. This program does not reflect modern educational standards or psychological understandings about childhood development and positive behavior support.

We propose the termination of the Make Your Day Program in favor of alternative strategies such as Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), which have proven successful nationwide. PBIS focuses on encouraging constructive behavior through a supportive and engaging learning environment. Implementing such a program would not only align with current educational research but also restore a nurturing and positive environment for our children.

The well-being of our students is at stake, and it's crucial that the Littleton School District hears our plea for change. Let's replace outdated and harmful systems with those that truly serve to empower our children.

Sign this petition to demand the discontinuation of the Make Your Day Program at Lakin Prep Academy and other schools in the Littleton School District. Let's advocate for an educational environment that fosters growth, courage, and learning in respectful and humane ways. Your support can lead to a brighter future for our children.
