On 11/16/22, a Deputy Sheriff illegally detained my car, while idling in a commuter parking lot across the street from a sheriff substation, in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, and ended up throwing me in jail for allegedly consuming Cannabis with keys in the car.

In the video, Douglas County Sheriff's Deputy Tammy Bozarth responded with an illegal detention and fishing expedition, and attempted to tear my life apart. 

My car was impounded, my dog was taken without even being asked his name, blood was collected because I was in fear, and worst of all, this entire thing was predicated on pretext that was later fabricated in writing by Deputy Bozarth, after admitting at 8 minutes and 45 seconds in her body worn camera footage that she had initiated a detention because of mere suspicion.

Rio is a good dog who has spent every day of his 5 years with Alex, and immediately began to shut down once he left, which aggravated the officers and they began to use a slipknot collar, in order to get him to comply with directions that he didn't understand.

It is both illegal and unethical to use the privileges of community care taking in order to conduct covert criminal investigations. While the news writes hero pieces about Miss Bozarth, she works outside of the law in order to secure arrests, which in itself is a grave violation of human rights and liberties.

I am just a recreational traveler WITH NO CRIMINAL RECORD WHATSOEVER who lives out of his vehicle, my name is Alexander Graul, and I am a full-time Amazon Flex Driver, but I had to spend over $4,000 of my own money defending against this ridiculous case, while simultaneously having to find new employment after Uber instantly deactivated my account because of the pending charges, losing an unknown amount of income. 

I believe the time has passed where we should sit idly by and let peaceful cannabis users be treated like this in our country. 

I expressed to the officer multiple times that I was attempting to stay warm in what was approaching single digit temperatures, and wasn't given any acknowledgment whatsoever that she understood, instead she chose to arbitrarily enforce a law that was meant to keep our roads safe, instead of making the compassionate choice, all while operating under a falsified reason for the stop to begin with. 

I believe everyone who breaks the law should be punished, but there needs to be reasonable and common sense consequences for breaking these laws. When we enforce a law that's meant to punish people who put others' lives at risk, to prosecute somebody who is not in motion and is clearly parked and idling in a long-term parking area, there must be a measured and fair punishment. 

All Coloradoans deserve to drive on roads that are made safe, but when we allow police to go from car to car with their lights on, checking and investigating tourists with no criminal intentions at all, we all become subject to deeper and more unscrupulous investigation methods from police who will not show compassion to us.
