The Issue
I am writing this petition not only on my behalf but for the sake of all South Africans who have experienced similar injustices. In my workplace, I've faced a deeply troubling reality during periods when work is scarce, like when we have to wait for new materials. South African workers, myself included, often receive EOCs, or End of Contracts, while our foreign colleagues remain employed despite the slowdown. This practice not only affects our livelihoods but also crushes our spirits as we feel marginalized in our own country.
The Human Rights Commission of South Africa was established to protect and uphold the rights of South African citizens. However, it has repeatedly failed to stand with us and prioritize our needs. Instead, there is a growing perception that our Commission is more interested in championing foreign nationals over their own citizens. This prioritization leaves many South Africans feeling sidelined and neglected.
There are countless examples where citizens have felt abandoned by the Commission. The lack of protection has become increasingly evident, and as citizens, we are left with a sense of hopelessness, feeling like strangers in our homeland. Public assurance of our rights is critical, especially in a nation recovering from a history so deeply charged with inequality and injustice.
To remedy this situation, we propose the following actions:
1. Disband the existing Human Rights Commission of South Africa and establish a new, impartial body dedicated to defending the rights of South Africans first and foremost.
2. Implement monitoring mechanisms to ensure fair treatment of all workers within South Africa, regardless of their nationality.
3. Create an oversight committee to review the decisions and actions of any future Commission to ensure that they align with their duty to South Africans.
