We write to provide a clear, accurate, and factual update regarding the matters raised with the Australian Government concerning Disaster Relief Australia (DRA).
It has become evident that DRA has not formally disclosed to staff and volunteers that it is subject to an investigation by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) into serious allegations relating to the conduct of its Senior Management and Executive Team. Elements of these allegations have already been reported publicly, including coverage in the The Sydney Morning Herald. The absence of transparent communication on an issue of this gravity has contributed to uncertainty and increased psychological risk for staff and volunteers who are entitled to accurate information.
On 28 January 2026, the Hon. Kristy McBain MP, Minister for Emergency Management, formally acknowledged receipt of correspondence sent to her office and to NEMA outlining serious allegations relating to DRA. In her response, the Minister confirmed that NEMA had acted immediately and that an internal assessment of the matters raised was underway. The Minister further advised that direction had been given for this assessment to be concluded as quickly as possible.
On 30 January 2026, NEMA provided written correspondence directly to the DRA Redress and Grievance Group. In that letter, NEMA confirmed that the matters raised were considered serious and would be managed in accordance with its legal and governance obligations. NEMA further confirmed that Deloitte Australia has been engaged to undertake an independent investigation into the allegations. Importantly, NEMA acknowledged concerns regarding the separate Worklogic investigation commissioned by the DRA Board and confirmed that Deloitte’s investigation will not rely upon, nor be determined by, the outcomes of that process.
Based on these formal acknowledgements, it is accurate to state that DRA is currently subject to an independent investigation commissioned by NEMA in relation to allegations of fraud and misconduct involving Commonwealth funding.
We are increasingly concerned by reports that inaccurate or misleading information may be circulating within DRA regarding the existence, status, or seriousness of this investigation. Ongoing uncertainty, silence, or minimisation of the situation contributes to further psychological harm and erosion of trust. Staff, volunteers, partners, and stakeholders are entitled to clarity in order to safeguard their well-being and to avoid further distress.
On the basis of maintaining psychological safety and ongoing welfare, a copy of the relevant correspondence from the Minister’s Office and NEMA confirming Deloitte’s appointment is being provided. While the initial communication was directed to a nominated contact point, it is materially relevant to the broader complainant cohort and is shared on behalf of the Redress Group in the interests of transparency.
This correspondence is provided in good faith and without prejudice. We strongly encourage all parties to rely on verified information issued by the Minister’s Office and NEMA rather than internal commentary or speculation.
Further updates will be provided as they become available.
